My experience as a website developer in Tullamore has led me to know how to plan a Website From Scratch .
Building a website without a plan usually leads to wasted time, messy structure, and maybe something that doesn’t really work. A bit of planning upfront saves a lot of fixing later.
Here’s a clear, practical way how we plan a website from scratch.
Define the Goal of the Website
Ask yourself, what is the aim of the website?
Be specific, on the aims. It is a waste of your time and money if you just want to have an online presence.” Think in terms of why you want the website.
Is it to
- Get leads (contact forms, calls)
- Sell products (ecommerce)
- Share information (blog, portfolio)
- Build trust (service business site)
or maybe all of the above.
Example:
A builders website goal is to generate calls and quote requests, not just to look nice.
Write your main goal down, then design your new website around your goals.
Understand Your Target Audience
You’re not building for yourself. You’re building for the people who will use it.
We always ask:
- Who are your possible and current clients?
- What problem are you trying to solve?
- What do they expect when they land on your site?
Example:
A photographers website should have lots of images in their portfolio
A kids’ product site can be more playful and visual.
Once you narrow this down, it should be easy to plan your design.
Plan the Site Structure (Sitemap)
Now we map out the pages your site needs.
Start simple. Most websites need:
- Home
- About
- Services / Products
- Contact
- Blog (optional)
Then break it down further if needed.
Example structure:
- Home
- Services
- Web Design
- Web Development
- SEO
- About
- Portfolio
- Contact
This then will be your blueprint for the pages you need.
Outline the Content for Each Page
Before design, we figure out what each page will actually say.
For each page, we ask and hopefully answer:
- What is the purpose of this page?
- What does the user need here?
- What action should they take?
Example: Home page
- Clear headline (what you do)
- Short explanation
- Key services
- Trust elements (reviews, logos)
- Call to action (contact, book, buy)
Sketch a Basic Layout
We don’t need fancy tools. A simple sketch works.
Plan
- Where content goes
- What’s the most important part of the page.
- How users will move through the page
We focus on the layout, not colors or fonts yet.
We Plan for SEO Early
SEO isn’t something we “add later.” It starts here.
Basic steps:
- We choose a main keyword for each page
- We use clear page titles
- We plan headings (H1, H2, etc.)
- We are always thinking about what users are searching for
Example:
Instead of “Web Services,” we use what people may be typing into Google.
For example “Web Design Services for Small Businesses.”
Think About User Experience
On all the pages, we ask ourselves.
- Is it easy to navigate?
- Can users find what they need quickly?
- Are important actions obvious?
We keep things simple:
- Clear menus
- Readable text
- Fast loading pages
- Mobile-friendly design
If users have to take too long finding information they want, they’ll leave.
Prepare Assets and Content
Before building a site, we gather everything together in the clients file:
- Text content
- Images
- Logos
- Brand colors
- Fonts
We have the layout plan already done, so it’s easy then to lay everything out.
Final Thoughts
Planning a website isn’t about making it perfect. It’s about removing guesswork.
If you:
- Know your goal
- Understand your audience
- Map out your structure
You’re already ahead of most projects.
A well-planned site is easier to build, easier to use, and far more effective.
